Bath Half Marathon 2012 · 11 March 2012 ·

It supports a girls primary school in one of the poorer parts of rural Uganda. It works closely with school management in a partnership designed to meet key needs. It provides midday meals for children otherwise missing out and because of hunger falling behind in their education.

Story

Friends of St. Michael’s Uganda has been supporting a primary girls’ school for 10 years. The school is set in a very rural and poor part of Eastern Uganda.

We will be running the Bath Half Marathon to enable the charity to buy Malaria Testing Kits for the new fully equipped Sick Bay. About 7 girls each week come down with symptoms of malaria.

The Malaria Testing Kits (which cost 70p) will be used by the nurse at the school to test if the children have malaria. By taking a small pin prick of blood the test can give an accurate reading. A well qualified Ugandan nurse has recently been recruited and a volunteer nurse from the Bristol Royal Infirmary has just arrived and will be spending two months at the school to establish good practice and training.

We hope the money raised from the Half Marathon, will enable the school to purchase at least two year’s supply of kits – saving lives.

Money from my run will also go towards the development of the School Lunch Feeding Programme - The Porridge Pot Project, now in its 5 year. There are over 500 day girls at the school, who the charity feed every school day. The girls get a bowl of maize porridge - and exam results and concentration in class has improved.

In August 2011 a volunteer spent time at the school to evaluate the Feeding Programme and look at ways it can be improved. The money raised will enable the charity to introduce fruit and vegetables into the girls’ diet.

100% of money raised goes directly to the school. All administration costs including the Just Giving fees are funded by donors who specifically support the administration costs of the charity.
