Why are we raising money?

In February 2009, at the age of 34, Fiona was diagnosed with breast cancer - a huge shock to a healthy, active police officer with no family history.

Last year she underwent chemotherapy, a mastectomy and completed her radiotherapy on 31st Dec 2009.

As a family we have come to appreciate the enormity and value of work done by cancer charities such as Breakthrough Breast Cancer working to beat cancer.  Breakthrough Breast Cancer works on 3 fronts: research, campaigning and education.  As a result Angela and Fiona, who are sisters, will be running the 2010 London Marathon and raising funds for Breakthrough.   Details of what the money supports is detailed below.

This is the second fundraising event which Fiona has been involved in.  Last June, she ran in a Cancer Research "Run for Life" 5k in Birmingham and raised £6,500.  Videos and pictures of the event are linked to this page.

1 woman in 9 is diagnosed with Breast Cancer in her lifetime.  At present 80% of of these women will survive for at least 5 years.  With your help we can help Breakthrough bring together the best minds to research this subject and save lives.

Thank you so much for supporting us.  It means a great deal and we look forward to telling you our London Marathon tale in April!

Regards,

Fiona Irving and Angela Mitchell

What does your money buy?
£5 - buys 100 microscopes slides, enabling Breakthrough scientists to study breast cancer cells.  By learning more about the biology of these cells, researchers can develop more tailored treatments for woment with breast cancer in the future.
£10 - buys storage containers for the blood samples used in the 'Breakthrough Generations Study' so that they can be kept safely for 40 years or more.  These samples will help scientists discover the causes of breast cancer.
£20 - buys 2 specialised gels that are needed to examine proteins during experiments, yielding insights into the causes of breast cancer
