We provide specialist hospice care to provide dignity when time matters most

Story

We are walking over hot coals to raise money for the Highland Hospice in memory of a very special person – Muriel Brough (Kennedy) – who passed away aged just 34 on 21 April 2012.

Family and friends will gather at The Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness on Saturday 13 April to take part in a Firewalk and hope to raise as much money as possible to help the Hospice continue their good work. For those who don’t know what a Firewalk is, it involves walking bare-foot across glowing embers at 600-800 farenheit.

Muriel fought a long hard battle with cancer and her family and friends have been left devastated by her death. Her spirit, faith and sense of humour never waned throughout her illness – she did what Muriel always did – try to make it easier for everyone else to deal with. We don’t know how many other people we know that would try and win an argument by playing their ‘cancer card’!! Her concern was never for herself but for those that she would leave behind and unfortunately those that she left behind will never be able to replace such a special and unique person.

Muriel spent her final days at the Highland Hospice in Inverness where she was cared for by the fantastic team there. The Highland Hospice is the only hospice serving adults with incurable life limiting disease in the Highlands of Scotland.

Palliative care focus on the control of pain and other symptom, on the reduction of suffering and the enhancement of the life that remains. By addressing these physical, psychological and social needs they aim to enable patients to live their life with dignity and to offer support to their families and friends, both during the patients illness and into bereavement.

The Highland Hospice is a charity. No charge is made to patients or their families. The Hospice receive approximately a third of their funding from the NHS – and in order to keep all their services going – they rely on the support of the public for the remainder of the income.

·     One in three lives in the UK are touched by Hospice care.

·     £20 donated to Highland Hospice will fund one hour of nursing care.

·     In a year, Highland Hospice directly cares for approximately 370 patients and their families. This is merely a part of their overall impact.

The girl in the photo is who we all remember – she would fling her arms up in the air and literally welcome you in with open arms and the biggest smile. We will be celebrating the life of this special person and only ask that you help us raise as much money as we possibly can!!

It is ironic that we are getting our toes out to raise money as Muriel HATED peoples toes – She would have a giggle at that we are sure!

Please dig deep, support our fundraising so that the Hospice can continue to support families...

Thank you for supporting Team Muriel xxx
