The Footsteps Rafiki Programme is aimed at broadening the experience of the children in the communities; bringing some fun and play into their lives: introducing them to sports and arts and creating the opportunity to meet new people and gain some understanding of the world outside their village.

The children are more often than not heavily burdened from a very early age. As the adult population has been devastated by Aids many of the children have taken on the role of parent, heading up families, trying to feed and clothe other siblings as well as trying to attend school.

Very often, it’s the child’s education that suffers. Even in countries like Kenya where primary education is supposed to be free, the schools charge for books and equipment which parents have difficulty paying for.

Missing school lays the foundation for a life of poverty. Footsteps gives children the opportunity of education or training by helping pay school fees, funding training places, and building new classrooms.

Next summer I will be joining a group of 16 young people who will be spending time working with these children. A condition of participation is that I should raise £1500 to fund the cost and to donate to the work of the charity.

I have already begun to raise funds by baking cakes and selling them at school, will be running a cookery course for my schoolmates, and also have had 2 photography jobs, but my principal sponsorship activity will be cycling.

Over the next three months I plan to cycle 1025km, equal to the length of Kenya. As it is winter I will be cycling indoors each day for more than a hundred days, with the distance verified by a third party. I would be so very grateful for your support in sponsoring me to raise money for this very worthwhile cause.
