When stroke strikes, part of your brain shuts down. And so does a part of you. Life changes instantly and recovery is tough. But the brain can adapt. Our specialist support, research and campaigning are only possible with the courage and determination of the stroke community.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In September 2009 my father died suddenly having suffered a stroke. He was in the stroke unit at Colchester Hospital within hours and initially responded well to treatment. Sadly as happens in a small percentage of patients he suffered a further stroke overnight, falling into a coma he passed away peacefully five days later. At 66 it felt far too soon for him to go and as often happens has left an enormous gap in our lives.

You always want to make your parents proud and one thing my father never thought I would do is give up smoking. With the fantastic support from my work and colleagues have used running as my incentive to stop. Early in 2010 I could barely run a bath having smoked for 27 years – I gave up in Oct 2010. Running the marathon in 2012 will therefore be the end of a personal journey for me, to once again make my father proud from wherever he may be watching.

During the five days in hospital reflecting on my father’s life and watching the wonderful care and support given by the nurses (especially to my mother). I promised then to do something to raise money, both as a tribute to him and as a thank you to the brilliant work carried out at the stroke unit in Colchester. It would be great to think that any money raised could help make that small percentage zero ....
