Story

Our son was just 6wks old when he became unwell, refusing feeds and not settling well. After visiting the doctors to be told he had reflux and thrush in the mouth and was advised to keep trying him with fluids, we came away both unhappy with advice given by the GP, Leo's Dad and I decided to take him to the walk in centre at the RD and E where he was admitted and we were quickly made aware that there was something a lot more serious wrong with our precious boy.

It was found that his heart was in fact beating far quicker than it was supposed to be (250 bpm as opposed to the 60-70bpm it should have been) and that this meant his oxegynated blood was not being pumped sufficiently around his tiny body. They had to give Leo emergency drugs through the bone in his leg to save him. Leo was later diagnosed with A rare congenital heart condition called Wolff Parkinson white syndrome (this is where he has an extra electricity current going around his heart) which often comes with other heart complications. Once stabilised in resus and liasing with one of the top heart consultants at Bristol Childrens Hopsital it was somewhat 7hours later he was transferred to the high dependency unit on Bramble ward, where he spent the night being closely monitored. After what we thought was a good night, we were mistaken....

Following numerous episodes of having SVTs and attempts to bring his heartbeat back down with the medication not working and the worry of the damage on the cardiac muscle with being in constant  SVTs   (supraventricular tachycardia) it  was decided that he should be transferred to Bristols Childrens Hospital for specialist care. They sent an ambulance to transfer him and we were blue lighted to Bristol with the specialist WATCH team, he was admitted  to intensive care for 4days where he recieved a higher dose of different medications to control his heartbeat saving his life and enabling us to keep our son in this world.

Moving forward our precious little man will require daily medication and heart monitoring by us using a stethoscope and heart monitor to constantly control his heart rate. He will also need heart surgery to enable him to have a full and active life.

We cant thank the doctors, nurses, ambulance crew, WATCH and other staff at both hospitals enough as we truly feel that without their knowledge and devotion to their work we would not have our darling son with us. Thank You.
