Just before Shorland died he came to a meeting to discuss the Poole Africa Link, a link between Poole and Wau,  a hospital in Southern Sudan. More information can be found on the Poole Website. 

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Wau,  where 5 of us worked with the doctors and nurses to improve standards of hygiene, basic nursing care and treatment.  They have no oxygen,  running water and patchy electricity yet they are trying to deal with the health care needs of a large area. There have been improvements and some doctors remain optimistic for the future.  We hope to raise enough money through this site to bring a junior doctor to Poole for 2-3 months of further training.  I identified a middle grade surgeon  who wishes to stay in Wau,  he has already passed part 1 and 2 in Edinburgh,  I think some time in UK would give him the chance to pass his final surgical fellowship.  We could also give him training in HDU care, ultrasound, and leadership.  learning skills to take back to his homeland. this will cost £3,000.
