We are fighting to make a world where diabetes does no harm

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. So...what have I let myself in for this time! This all started as a slightly inebriated agreement last year to go on a bike ride and has somehow ended up as a rather unorthodox Pentathlon. OK, so maybe slightly inebriated is a little bit of an understatement, but I have it on good authority that the reason you slur your words and fall over a lot when drunk is that alcohol shuts down all non-essential bodily functions to allow the brain to perform to it's full potential. So this must be one of my better ideas, it's scientifically proven! FACT!

The goal now stands at five challenges across the summer of 2010...

Challenge #1  - 20 mile Walk - 17th July

Starting off nice and easy with a gentle 20 mile stroll around the capital. An exercise in willpower as much as fitness, with many of 's 4,000 boozers to be passed en route. As Johnny Walker says, "Keep Walking". The trouble with walking is that the ice falls out of your glass!

Challenge #2 - Three Peaks Challenge - TBD

I'm in no shape to exercise patience (groan!) so hopefully after successfully completing Challenge #1 I'm going to be at "peak" fitness (double groan) and a little "boulder" (please stop!) and attempting the Three Peaks challenge. The aim is simple, run up and down the three highest mountains in the within 24 hours. For those of you that aren't up on your geography that's Ben Nevis in @ 4,409ft, Scafel Pike in The Lake District @ 3,209ft and Snowdon in @ 3,560ft. I know that some of you may be saying "It's a hill, get over it"!... but that's approximately 26 miles of mountain running and 500 miles of driving in one day! I hope the Sherpa's have enough energy to carry the beer supply!

Challenge #3 - LeJog - 21st August to 5th September

I think it was Mark Twain who once said "Learn to ride a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live." Challenge #3 is possibly the most daunting at this stage, bearing in mind, until this weekend, I have had no experience of riding a bike on the road. So far training is going well, the ride has been acquired from a friend "peddling" used bikes, the lycra mankini adorned and the first full TWELVE miles of training completed with only a couple of minor scrapes. Thankfully I appear to have a habit of falling to the left and into the bushes rather than the overtaking cars. However, I was told a horror story the other day about a cyclist who had his whole left side cut off! Don't worry though, he's "all right" now!

An interesting fact (for those of you that are as sad as me). The bicycle is the most efficient machine ever created. Converting calories into gas, a bicycle gets the equivalent of three thousand miles per gallon!

So for those of you who don't know what LeJog is, it's a challenge to get from Land's End in (the most South Westerly point of England) to John o' Groats in , (the most Norhterly point of mainland ). All in all, it's about 1,000 miles of cycling over two weeks. Let's hope I'm not "two-tired" to finish!

Challenge #4 - Run to the Beat Half - 26th September

After hopefully completing the cycling next comes the running. Thankfully my other legs are Kenyan! The race starts at the O2, finishes at the O2 13.1 miles later and goes some places in between (as you can see I'm well researched on this one!). I used to jog five miles a day, until I found a short cut. So some serious training may be required!

Challenge #5 - Loch Ness - 2nd October

One week later and the final challenge arrives, the marathon. Yes, for those of you who know your Ancient Greek, I will be following in the footsteps of Pheidippies (hopefully minus the death upon arrival), who in 490BC ran the 26 miles and 385 yards from the battlefield at Marathon to to announce that the Persians had been defeated. Not quite how I would have chosen to celebrate, but hey, everyone to their own. This will be my first marathon and, after running a 16 mile practice a few months ago I have to admit I'm a little intimidated by the distance. However, they say that running is a mental sport and thankfully I'm insane, so I'm hoping I'll take it all in my "stride" and not suffer the agony of "de feet".

So that's the plan, all in all ~1,100 miles of exercise. To give some perspective, that's the equivalent of a flight from to (and if the volcano is still erupting, probably in the same time frame! Ambitious, yes. For a good cause, definitely! All of the money raised will go to Diabetes . There are currently over 2.6 million people with diabetes in the and there are up to half a million people with diabetes who have the condition and don't know it. Diabetes is the largest organisation in the working for people with diabetes, funding research, campaigning and helping people live with the condition. A good friend of mine recently lost his mother to diabetes, so any donations, however small, would be greatly appreciated!

All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure!
