In 1999, my mother, the writer Julie Welch, and I ran the London Maration together. Here is a photo of us just before the start. Some 13 years and many wrinkles later, we have decided to do it together again for the Shaw Trust Charity. The Shaw Trust is a national charity helping people gain skills and confidence so they can be supported into work and live more independent lives. For 30 years, Shaw Trust has helped thousands of people, including those with learning difficulties, physical disabilities or mental illness, gain social inclusion through employment. We all know how demoralising it is to not have a job, to feel on the scrap-heap or feel socially excluded. By focusing on what people can do, rather than what people can’t do, Shaw Trust offers people a sense of self-worth and the chance to feel part of society.
