SMA is a genetic disease that affects motor neurones. 1:40 of us is a carrier and in its most severe form children rarely live beyond 2 – making SMA the leading genetic cause of death in babies and toddlers. The SMA Trust is solely dedicated to funding research into a cure and treatments for SMA

Story

One of my Best Friends, also called Freddie, suffers for a condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA for short). It prevents him from walking and he has been in a wheel chair since he was just six months. He can't do most of the things we would take for granted, so small and simple we won't really notice them, like getting changed in the morning, picking up something you dropped, or being able to open a closed door. Freddie is not the only boy to suffer, every one in 1600 people carry the faulty gene which causes this.

Scientists are working towards a cure for SMA, and are almost there, though they can never reach their goal without money. The charity, the SMA trust is trying to raise £2,000,000 in 2011 for reseach into this cure which could give boys just like my friend a chance to walk and live a normal life as we all do.

In aid of the Charity me and Freddie are helping to orginise a school Event where each boy in year 8 will do a MAD triatholon trying to raise money for this great charity. So give, please, to sponser me for this charity and help other boys live a better life.

I shall be swimming 400m, running 1600m and cyling 15km all on the afternoon of the 7th July.
