Two years ago we lost our beautiful baby boy Freddy. He was born asleep at 23.4 weeks. Surrey Sands supported us from the very moment we had the sad news, through the time we spent in East Surrey Hospital Sands room and in the following months and years after his passing. Without Sands, I could not have coped at such a low time in my life and I was supported each and every step of the way. Surrey Sands continue to support so many families when they lose their precious babies and their work cannot be faulted.
I now feel in a position of strength to raise money to donate to Surrey Sands and have chosen a specific project that I feel is very worthy. My friend and Befriender Lorna Bland, Chairman of Surrey Sands, approached Epsom council in 2010 to enquire about building a Babies Memorial Garden in Epsom cemetery. They have been given a 27" by 27" piece of land on the elevated southern extention of the cemetery with fabulous views over London. Over the past year with the help of 4 creative volunteers, the garden design has slowly evolved. It will be a tranquil place for families to sit together and reflect on their loss. Included in the design will be bronze sculptures of children playing, a tree, flowers, creative paving, seating and an area for the scattering of ashes. Most importantly there will be an area for babies memorial plaques. It is hoped this garden will provide a peaceful haven and a place of comfort for everyone affected by the death of a baby, however recently or long ago.
To do my bit towards the project I am organising Freddys Footsteps and Sands family fun day which will involve a sponsored 5k run/walk/hobble, a family picnic, fun, games and refreshments. We are also holding a raffle with great prizes! It will be our day to thank Surrey Sands for everything and most of all, to remember Freddy our beautiful baby boy, who we miss so much every day.
