Story
I'm working at Euroclear which has a charity program called Kalengo (rural Uganda), to support via the below explained VSLA, schools and other needs/equipment for the community there.
The ‘Village Savings and Loans Associations’ (VSLA) model has existed for more than 20 years, and Build Africa adopted it in 2009 because it so greatly complimented the organisation’s existing education work in rural East Africa. This model helps 20-30 members of a rural community, with little or no access to the traditional banking system, to come together on a weekly basis, save small amounts of their hard-earned money, and pool it together until it reaches the point where members can access credit. The amount and repayment terms of these small loans are agreed collectively by the group, and members then have the ability to invest in their small businesses, to buy school uniforms and stationary for their children, or to access a ‘welfare fund’ in which they can send a family member to hospital without second thought, because the money is there and they won’t be charged interest to pay it back to the group.
Since 2009, close to 50,000 members of VSLAs set up by Build Africa have earned (through savings and interest) an incredible £1.3 million. 70% of these members are women. The results has been vast, with nearly 200,000 people impacted: 60% of families increased their access to medical care, 43% of households now have three meals a day, and we’ve seen a 28% reduction in the number of children unable to attend school due to financial constraints.
I will participate in a few runs during 2016:
- Antwerp 10 Miles: 16km at Antwerp
- Stadsloop De Gentenaar: 10km at Ghent
- 20km of Brussels
- Great Breweries Marathon: 42.195km at Puurs
- Midzomernachtrun: 15km at Ghent
And a few more, still to be confirmed.
