About cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening inherited disease, affecting almost 10,000 people in the UK.
You can’t catch or develop CF, it’s something you're born with and most cases in the UK are now diagnosed soon after birth.
People have Cystic Fibrosis because a faulty gene is passed from the parents to the child.
Cystic Fibrosis can’t be caught or developed. If you are not born with CF you will never have it .For someone to be born with CF, both parents must carry the faulty gene. If both parents have the gene, there is a 25% chance the child will have CF. In many cases, parents do not know they are carriers until their child is born.
Cystic fibrosis causes the body to produce thick mucus, which affects the lungs and digestive system in particular.
Symptoms of CF can include a troublesome cough, repeated chest infections, prolonged diarrhoea and poor weight gain.
Cystic fibrosis is a complex disease that affects many different organs.
Currently there is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). However, through research and improved cystic fibrosis services and care, quality and length of life for people with the condition continues to improve.
Each week five babies are born with Cystic Fibosis.
Each week three young lives are lost to Cystic Fibrosis.
The average life expentancy for someone living with CF is 31 years.
Through fund raising and generous donating this helps with the advances of treatments that can be made available to people living with Cystic Fibrosis - which in turn will hopefully ensure that people with CF will live a long and healthy life.
