Hello my name is Gareth and I'm 18 years old and am a history student at Hull university and an avid gamer. my earliest gaming memories are of me playing the first generation Pokémon games on the classic Game Boy console when I was around 3 or 4 or playing the first play station console with my next door neighbor or my parents. Now unfortunately, there are a huge amount of kids, teenagers, and young adults who can't experience the same joy I had, for reasons way out of their control.
There are over 11 million people in the United Kingdom living with a long term or limiting disability and almost 25% of those are young people or adults of working age (Office For Disability Issues, 2014). It is not unreasonable to assume a large portion of those have an interest in video games and technology, and this is where SpecialEffect (Reg. Charity No: 1121004) comes in.
SpecialEffect is a company that helps research and develop technologies that give disabled people the chance to enjoy video games, such as developing StarGaze, a project that introduced the eye-gaze and the eye-tracking technologies as a means to play video games and even give many the ability to use a computer and even brows the web, which is something most of us take for granted in our everyday life.
This charity and people behind it and all of its research are at the very center of this Gaming Marathon; we at Hull University Gaming Marathon hope that we can raise a considerable amount of money for this amazing and well worthy cause, and I hope you can spare some cash as well and help us all out!
