My story

Why 13 13 13 you may ask?    Well this year I have taken on the challenge of running 13 half marathons (13.1 miles each) in 13 months to commemorate and more importantly celebrate what would have been the 13th year of my son, Max's life.    He passed away, aged 15 months, on the 27th December 1999.

I will be raising money for a charity that helped our son and family after Max's death and has remained close to our hearts ever since - Daisy’s Dream.  This charity supports children and their families affected by both life threatening illness and bereavement, throughout Berkshire and the Thames Valley -  see most recent publicity at:  http://www.maidenhead-advertiser.co.uk/News/Areas/Maidenhead/Dad-to-run-13-half-marathons-in-memory-of-son-29122011.htm

My initial and conservative challenge was to raise £1313 to support the charity - the equivalent of a family support day, bringing together up to 20 children who have suffered the loss of a parent or sibling.     An event like this can make a real difference to children when they are at their most vulnerable by giving them the opportunity to know that they are not alone and other people really do understand how they feel.  However, thanks to the generous support of a few, this target has already been surpassed and now, you can help me raise considerably more.

By your giving £100 Daisy's Dream will be able to provide an initial visit to a bereaved family to offer support and advice ... I know from experience, perhaps the most valuable visit the family will receive.

By your giving £50 Daisy's Dream can release balloons in celebration of a life .... a simple symbolic act that can act as an important 'release'.

By your giving £20 Daisy's Dream can help provide a memory box for each child .... a story box of memories that will live forever in celebration of a sibling.

AND NOW a little bit of crucial information concerning the running! My times for each half marathon thus far are ...

1. Henley (Oxfordshire): 1hr 51 minutes 58 seconds (hilly and my first) (Oct 2011).   2. Marlow (Buckinghamshire): 1hr 48 minutes 05 seconds (very hilly) (Nov 2011).   3. Moreton Morrell (Warwicks): 1hr 39mins 11secs (two circuit 20km metric 1/2) (Dec 2011).  4. Helsby (Cheshire): 1h 43 minutes 19 seconds (very windy and undulating).    5. Wokingham (Berkshire): 1hr 45 mins 16 seconds (sunny, cool and run with a chest infection!).  6. 'Water for Life' (Bisham, Berkshire): 1hr 47 mins 07 seconds (sunny and warm, on multi-terrain; stop start as involved bridges, kissing gates and so forth).   Most recently (1st April) 7. Reading (Berkshire): 1hr 42 mins 36 secs.  (Very pleased with this fast time).  8. Bracknell (Berkshire): 1hr 42 mins 11 secs. (very wet, windy and generally horrible! But another PB so very pleased). Number Nine is on the South Downs on the 6th May

The 13th race will take place on the 16th September 2012, in Maidenhead - an appropriate and timely end to this tough challenge, as this is what would have been the week after Max's 14th birthday. At this event there will be a team of runners (hopefully 14 or more) running in 'Max's Team' and in celebration of the year past and his birthday.  Thanks to all those who will be joining the team and who are also training hard.

Please give generously - every pound will help Daisy's Dream achieve their objectives and will help me in remembering and celebrating Max in his 13th year.

And thank you.
