Last year my wife Karen August died from the resulting impact of MS. Diagnosed at just twenty eight, Karen first experienced the relapse/ remitting form of this incurable illness and was still an active caring mother to our three children she also continued to work as a manager with William Hill bookmakers. MS slowly took it's toll with the illness becoming more progressive. This led to surgery on her brain in an attempt to cure a tremor which ran through the centre of her body. Karen became scared to cuddle the kids in case she hurt them ( once the tremor started it was uncontrollable for her). Karen bravely fought her illness for over 20yrs, it took it's toll on our marriage and we
parted from each other. Our marriage however was never terminated and until they day she died she was still my wife. The effect Karen's illness had on our three children is not easy to explain. They HAD to develop an inner strength to be able to cope with seeing their mother become increasingly disabled, eventually bedridden and fed intravenously. On her death, the REAL impact became apparent to me, they were cruelly robbed of counsel, social activity and the right to share normal emotions with their own mother.This is the second sponsored walk we will be completing on behalf of the MS Society, my daughter Georgina is taking part in the London Marathon for the same cause.
