Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In September 2009 I lost the sight in my right eye, I spent 2 weeks in the Eye Pavillion in Edinburgh. The doctors and the support from the nurses was great while I was in hospital and they managed to save the eye. I had an abscess and an ulser on the cornea of my eye. This has left permanent scaring on the front of my eye wich has left me without sight for the last couple of years. There is a chance that I get my sight back through a cornea transplent, however this is a complex operation and I wont be able to do sport for a couple of years after the operation. I have picked 'FightforSight' for personal reasons, all doctors and nurses I have seen oer the past couple of years have been great. For years to come I will continue to see specialist before and after the cornea transplant. I will have the chance to get my sight back in the future, however some people are not so lucky.

Heres a little bit about what 'FightforSight' does:

'FightforSight' was instrumental in establishing the UK Corneal Transplant Service, a computerised national distribution service for corneal tissue. This service has vastly improved the availability of corneas for transplantation by facilitating the sharing of tissue between hospitals and by reducing wastage. More than 48,000 corneal transplants have been recorded since the service began.  In addition, Fight for Sight are currently funding research projects, being carried out at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, that will help increase the success of corneal transplantation as well as another project which is studying the use of in vivo confocal microscopy to monitor risk of rejection in transplant patients.
