On the 19th of July I will be aiming to complete the Three Peaks Challenge primarily in memory of a lifelong friend, Jeff Goldthorp, who suddenly died at the age of 36 of an undetected heart disease whilst in China last July.

Jeff was a fun loving friendly guy, who always put a smile on my face – whether it was intentional or not.  I will miss the times we did get together, especially around Christmas.

Unfortunately Jeff is not just the only person I aim to do the walk in memory of.   On that Friday of hearing the sad news about Jeff I went for a meal with an ex work colleague Gary Knight to celebrate his wife’s Sallie 46th birthday and their upcoming wedding anniversary.  I was late to the meal and explained it was due Jeff’s passing.   On the following Thursday I received some more devastating news that Sally had died of a heart defect. 

The day after Jeff’s funeral I later learnt that a friend, Lee Smith had also passed away of a heart defect.  Lee had recently married a college friend Sally and had just become a father to 10 week old boy Oliver.  Lee was in his early thirties and died suddenly at work.

My own partner Lucy suffers from a heart issue – a strong form of the Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome and takes regular medication to aid her condition. She had to fund her own major heart operation just over five years to prolong her life.

Last year brought many low points and it would be nice to remember the people that are no longer with us and work towards providing a better future to ensure it doesn’t affect those nearest and dearest to those to you.
