As you may know I suffered from Pre-eclampsia during my first pregnancy with my daughter Evin.
Pre-eclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. Affecting at least 5-8% of all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms; however, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.
Globally, preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of maternal and infant illness and death. By conservative estimates, these disorders are responsible for 76,000 maternal and 500,000 infant deaths each year, my daughter is among this figure.
On February 28th 2004 I became so ill that an emerency cesarian was performed to deliver Evin and try to save my life.
I survived with some damage to my eyes and kidneys, but my beautiful baby did not. She was born with brain damage and lived only 4 days.
There is little known about the condition, but advances are being made all the time with help from fundraising.
I know that I would not be here if the drugs they had given me had not been developed the year before.
I will start my fundraising on Evins 6th birthday 28th February 2010 and hopefully use this to run the 2012 London Marathon in her name.
I need to raise at least £1400 to do this.
Please help me and those at action on pre-eclampsia work towards putting an end to the suffering this condition causes, and save the lives of those for which life has not yet begun.
