I am running in this year’s London Marathon on behalf of the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre (Charity number 1064646).

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty which mainly affects the development of literacy and language related skills. In the approximately one in eight people are affected by dyslexia and need specialist support to manage its effects.  Early identification of dyslexia and specialist teaching ensures that each child is given the right type of support and experiences success when learning.  For adults who may not have been diagnosed at an early age, an assessment and appropriate support can help them to understand their strengths and suggest strategies to minimise their weaknesses.

Dyslexia occurs in people of all ages and abilities; many will experience failure in the education system or at work and this can impact severely on their self-esteem and cause them to feel frustrated, unintelligent and in extreme cases to contemplate suicide.

Helen Arkell was one of the original pioneers of dyslexia and champions of dyslexic causes. The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre was set up by Helen Arkell in 1971 and has been a central beacon for dyslexics since that date.   It is the longest established dyslexia centre in the country and is a centre of excellence.

Today the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre (HADC) offers a wide variety of services, including assessments to identify dyslexia, specialist teaching to support children and adults, as well as running professional training courses for those who want to learn more about dyslexia and become trained to work with dyslexics.  Last year over 100 specialist teachers qualified at the Centre and are now working within the education system and supporting dyslexic learners.  HADC has strong links with many of the local schools and offers advice, training and teaching for their staff and pupils.

HADC’s Bursary Fund is essential to the Centre’s work; it is available for all of its services to people who cannot afford the fees.  It enables the Centre to assist everyone who comes for help, regardless of the ability to pay.  The Bursary Fund depends entirely on donations.

Any amount you are able to give will directly benefit children and adults who need support with their dyslexia.

Thank you
