Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

SUCCESS!! - I reached Everest Base Camp (5308m) on 20th April along with my nephew Sean after a 10 day slog taking in an ascent of Gokyo Ri (5362m), crossing the Ngozumba Glacier and Cho La Pass (5376m). I topped off EBC with an ascent of Kala Patthar (5644m) the following day! In total, 157km walked with a cumulative ascent of 11600m and 44,000 calories burnt! Many thanks to everyone who supported me in this quest and for your support of cancer research.

Having turned 50 and now working my way through my ‘bucket list’, I plan to trek to Everest Base Camp (5360m) with my nephew, Sean Middleton, in April 2011 via the longer, higher, tougher Gokyo Lakes / Cho Lo Pass route. This is an 18 day trek, 9 days of which are above 4000m with 5 of those days above 5000m.

I hope to raise at least 5000 GBP for the ‘Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK’ in memory of my late father-in-law, Walter Harry Bint* who died from bowel cancer and the many thousands who die each year from this devastating illness. Any sponsorship that you would be willing to contribute will certainly be going to a worthy cause (note – 100% of all donations goes to the charity).

As an alternative (or if you are feeling really generous!), you might be interested in sponsoring my nephew via his sponsorship site in aid of 'Help for Heroes’ via the following link: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/SeanandGeoff.

* Walter died aged 70 on 6th November 2002 from bowel cancer, the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK after lung cancer and an illness that killed over 600,000 people worldwide in 2008. Walter had a distinguished and decorated career in the British Army, serving his country for over 25 years around the world including Germany, Malaya (now Malaysia), Singapore and Hong Kong. After an honourable discharge he was invited to join  The Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard, a ceremonial bodyguard in which he served for 20 years rising to the rank of Divisional Sergeant Major, officiating at royal events including State Openings of Parliament, ceremonies for visiting Heads of State and Royal Weddings. For his services to his country, Walter was recognised in the 1999 New Year Honours List, receiving the Royal Victorian Medal. He was a talented musician, highly skilled carpenter and witty host, and is much missed by his family and friends.
