Story
We're doing this climb up Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for the NW Air Ambulance and also raise awareness of organ donation, which will hopefully encourage people to sign up to the organ donor register at www.organdonation.nhs.uk. All trip expenses are being funded by the trekkers themselves, so every penny raised goes direct to the air ambulance.
In August last year, George Higginson age 10, the son of one of the trekkers, died after a collision with a vehicle. The air ambulance was called, and due to the expertise of the medics on board and the swiftness of the journey, George was able to be placed on a ventilator and sent direct to a local hospital with a specialist neurology centre. Despite the best efforts of all involved, George sadly died the next day. Due to the nature of his injuries and the fact he was on a ventilator, he was able to donate his heart, lungs, liver, pancreas and kidneys, which helped save the lives of 5 people, with ages ranging from 4 to 44.
