Story
Hello, thank you for visiting my JustGiving page!
I'm really excited to tell you that I will be volunteering with Habitat for Humanity this September as part of a team who are travelling to Ghana for 10 days to build some basic housing. Ghana is within West Africa and has an estimated population of 23 million. However 80% of the population live on less than £1.50 a day. Ghana’s economy revolves mainly around agriculture, accounting for 60% of the workforce and relies heavily on international financial aid. In rural areas, the mud houses that provide shelter for extended families are crumbling due to poor drainage systems and torrential rain.
Since Habitat began in Ghana in 1987, almost 7000 houses have been built in over 145 communities countrywide. The houses are made of pressed soil blocks, fired bricks or cement blocks with aluminium roofing. The houses are very simple and designed to be affordable for low income families.
I'm travelling out there with a group of 12 other volunteers to hopefully give something back and make some small contribution to improving people's living conditions. I would be grateful for any help you might be able to give me either via donation to the Habitat charity or tips about spending 10 days in the burning heat, up to my eyes in mud and not a pair of high heels in sight!
I'll keep you posted on our progress and bring back the stories and photos of how your donation made a huge difference to making a better life for people less fortunate.
Thank you for your support,
Lorraine x
