Story

I as delighted to report that I completed the climb to the summit of Mount Kenya at 6am on Tuesday 29th March 2011.

It followed 2 days of steady climbing in some of the most spectacular and glorious environments. The going was tough - the altitude meant that we could only go very slowly and steadily due to severe shortness of breath. Only 2 of the team were unable to complete the climb.

I was absolutely determined to complete the challenge. Not least because the cause is so close to my heart as Ambassador for the Order of Malta in Kenya.

The donations I have received will help to support the work of the Order in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, where we have a team of 60 Community Health Workers who are 100% dedicated to the care and support of TB patients in 10 slum areas. What makes these individuals so inspiring is that they are all slum dwellers themselves and their living conditions are not dissimilar to those they are helping. To motivate and reward the team they receive incentives; sugar, soap, small sums of money and certificates for long service.

Through the hard work and commitment of the CHWs the Order of Malta Tuberculosis projects have been extraordinarily successful, exceeding the Millennium Development Goal 6, targets set by the World Health Organisation. The contribution made by the CHWs means that the patients are being encouraged to get tested for TB, are completing their course of medication, and are being provided with support throughout.

It is not too late to still support me in this challenge - whatever you donate go towards supporting the cause.
