Story
I am running the Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money again for UNICEF’s Children's corners project which aims to help thousands of impoverished children in Malawi.
Why am I doing this… Malawi is one of the worst countries in the world affected by HIV/AIDS. More than 600,000 children under the age of 15 have lost one or both parents to AIDS - that is 1 in every 10 children. Tens of thousands of children are currently living totally on their own. The extended family can no longer cope with the increasing numbers of orphans and these children are struggling to survive without the love, care and support they need and deserve. In addition, there is an ongoing food crisis, which started back in 2002, that affects approximately 4 million people. The lack of food has worsened the levels of malnutrition and risk of diseases such as cholera and AIDS.
How does your money help…The children's corners are community buildings refurbished and equipped by UNICEF to provide a safe harbour and essential support for these kids. As well as shelter and protection the corners provide basic medical help, counseling, a daily meal, playgrounds and much more. The shelters also help older children get back to school by providing a safe refuge to leave their younger sisters and brothers.
