Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the River Ness 10k race around the banks of Loch Ness while Finlay takes in the view from his buggy, in aid of The Nicola Murray Foundation.  Nicola was a colleague who became a dear friend, she was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in January 2010 and died just 4 months later, aged 34.

Ovarian cancer is the forth most common cause of death among women in the UK and causes 125,000 deaths per year worldwide.  Around 1 in 10 women who develop this cancer have a faulty gene that runs in her family, Nicola was one of them.  Hereditary non polyposis colerectal cancer (HNPCC) is a syndrome that greatly increases the risk of a person to colorectal, endometrial or ovarian cancers at a young age and as yet there has been limited research into the effects of these genes on Ovarian cancer.

Nicola requested that any fundraising in her name should benefit those with Ovarian cancer.  The Nicola Murray Foundation was therefore created and all funds raised go directly to the Edinburgh Cancer Centre to fund research aimed at improving the outcome for Ovarian cancer sufferers who carry HNPCC.

Finlay and I are looking forward to running together for Nicola and anything you can give will make our memories even more special.

Many thanks,

Gill & Fin xx
