On the 21 September, myself Paul Bennett, Neil Menpes and Tom Samuels will set off from Winchester in an attempt to walk the South Downs Way in four days. We will be covering just over one hundred miles of undulating terrain on our way to Eastbourne. That will mean completing a marathon a day for four days.
We are doing this to raise money for a charity called Headlines, it is charity that has helped my family and many others come to terms and give us reassurance when our child has been born with a craniofacial condition.
Many people will be unaware of the condition as it is very rare 1in 2500 are born with craniosynostosis that’s about 250-300 a year in the UK, some cases are mild and are fixed with one operation, others are more involved and involve many life saving operations, all are a shock for the new parents who have never come across this before.
Headlines brings families with these conditions together so they can share their worries, and give advice to each other, as well as bringing kids together, some who have never met someone else that looks the same as they do. This helps their confidence and all of a sudden they are not the odd one out.
Over the past 9 years Headlines have helped me and my family cope with Erin’s many operations, and given us a light at the end of the tunnel.
