Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am Secretary for Ryde Inshore Rescue and have been since 1967, the year Gill and I got married -I am not sure which is the longest sentence!!

Ryde Inshore Rescue are having difficulties raising money to extend their HQ & Rescue Centre. Built in 1978 when the club was basically a lifeguard club it is now severely overcrowded with all the equipment we need to run an inshore rescue service, train personnel and raise funds to keep it going. The National Lottery have not been very supportive and have turned us down 3 times for various reasons.

I am over 71 years old and no longer able to raise funds by swimming the Solent as I have often done in the past but I can still walk. I have thought several times about Alfred Wainwright's coast to coast walk from St Bees Head on the West Coast of Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire North sea coast and I must do it soon or I will be too old.

The walk is 192 miles long and was publicized last year by a TV series with Julia Bradbury. We plan to do the walk over 12 days - its nearly a Walk the Wight for 12 days running!!

I will be accompanied by my sister and brother in law - both very long standing members of Ryde Inshore Rescue Joy was the first club secretary way back in 1956 and Ian was club captain and senior helm for several years and finally became our second president. Both are keen walkers and have visited the Lake District many times. My wife Gillian cannot do the walk as she has a weak knee. However she will be doing a very valuable job transporting our luggage and the team to and from the start and finish points for each day

To ease us into the walk we will be staying in the Lake District for a week with our families and hopefully will do the first two segments in that week accompanied by our grandchildren.

The Coast to Coast is an endurance walk and it will give us increased vigor to know that you have sponsored and that we cannot afford to give up part way through.
