Some of you know that my daughter, Lily-Mai, was born with a condition called hip dysplasia, but unfortunately this was not detected until she was 4 months old. We began to grow concerned when we noticed a couple of small signs, so Caroline went to see our doctor and we were referred to a consultant at the hospital. They confirmed our fears and when she was 4 months old Lily-Mai was fitted with a pavlik harness 24 hours a day and then one month later had an operation on her hip before being fitted with a hip spica cast.
When we found out she had hip dysplasia Caroline researched this extensively online and found the Steps website (www.steps-charity.org.uk). Steps is a registered charity supporting children and adults affected by a lower limb condition such as clubfoot, or a condition known as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). DDH is when the ball and socket do not fit snugly together: Lily-Mai has now had 6 X-rays at the hospital to examine the progress of her bone development.
We found the Steps website extremely useful and watched the videos with great interest. These videos definitely helped us in preparing us for what lie ahead and in dealing with changing nappies, feeding time and just getting her around. We also sent these videos onto her nursery, who were fantastic in dealing with her cast/harness which reduced the concern on us, as first time parents.
Following her operation and removal of her cast, Lily-Mai then had to go back into the pavlik harness for 24 hours a day. During this whole time, it didn’t seem to affect Lily-Mai and she remained a happy, very contented baby. Even now, at 15 months old, she still wears a brace at night, but she seems to be catching up with her development, and like most babies she enjoys crawling at record speeds (she is actually quicker than me), eating remote controllers/mobile phones and throwing her food on the floor!!
I am planning on cycling from London to Paris in June 2012 and would therefore like to raise money for Steps. This isn’t an organised ride where only a fraction goes to the charity, so all money raised will go straight to Steps, and I will be financing my own travel and accommodation costs.
