Decided to take on the 26 mile Belvoir Challenge walk this year to raise money for the Eve appeal, a charity my daughter Sarah supported towards the end of her life. The Eve Appeal was set up to save women's lives by funding research into gynaecological cancers.
Ovarian cancer has been described as the silent killer. Sarah was first diagnosed in November 2007 and died just 10 weeks later on January 19 2008 aged 28.
Weakened by her chemotherapy, Sarah wrote a moving entry to her blog on the Myspace website, which would ultimately be her last. She said: "The fresh air is coming in my door which looks out on to the garden at Loros. Sometimes a squirrel pops its head up on the bird table and there are lots of birds. It's my last contact with the outside world now. Lots of real mates and family around. Finding it hard now to even get out of bed or sit up." [ http://www.myspace.com/pinkfraggle ]
Two days later Sarah died, prompting scores of tributes to be left online by those who had shared the tears and laughter through her battle with ovarian cancer.
Each year in the UK 6,600 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and 4,400 women die from the disease. When ovarian cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage, the mortality rates are even more devastating.
The Belvoir Challenge is a16 or 26 mile event for walkers and runners around the Vale of Belvoir and Belvoir Escarpment in north-east Leicestershire. The date for the 2010 20th Annual Belvoir Challenge is Saturday 27th February 2010. The 26 mile route which I opted for starts and finishes at Harby School, following footpaths, byways, tracks, and minor roads, and with the kind permission of the Duke of Rutland, goes through the Belvoir Estate
