Mount Kilimanjaro 2013 · 17 October 2013

We are a small charity and Africa’s problems are undeniably vast. We are focusing our efforts on supporting one of the poorest countries in the world - Burkina Faso. Working with Bethel Secondary School we; improve quality of and access to education; develop vocational skills and give meals.

Story

“One of the most important requirements for sustained progress towards better education is an improved learning environment, encompassing school infrastructure, textbook availability, the learning process and the interaction between children and teachers” (UNESCO, 2010)

My target to raise £10K through climbing Mount Kili in 2013 is in order that through our school partner AEAD in Burkina Faso, we can put in place a programme to offer to all students leaving Bethel School an opportunity to receive training for a chosen vocational skill to equip them not only with formal education but also the means to sustain them and their families with practical skills for life.

£200 is all it takes to train fully a student to become a brick mason, and £50 will give all training and materials required for a woman potter to have a real livelihood for her and generations to follow.

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the World with an estimated 57% of people living below the poverty line. It ranks 161 out of 169 countries on the UN’s Human Development Index (an index used to rank all countries standard of living) and there are 1.8 million secondary aged children not in secondary education. According to the World Bank (2010), Burkina Faso has one of the lowest Gross Enrolment Rates in post primary education in Africa, along with one of the lowest adult literacy rates (estimated at 29%).

Bethel School

Our goal is to contribute to the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the local community by providing a safe and flexible environment for children to learn and develop relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes. For more information on the school design – please follow the link: http://www.givingafrica.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=85&Itemid=506

Each child educated can find employment, or start a business, and lift another 12 people from poverty. This is part of a virtual development cycle: improving all aspects of life including health, mortality, environmental sustainability, socio / economic position and equality.

Our Need

Commencement on site with construction of the project is now only months away ... and through Giving Africa over 70% of the required £250K fund has been raised.

We need your help to reach the target for this school so that we can start work on designing the next school for Giving Africa.
