UPDATE....

I've now attempted to walk the West Highland Way, but it didn't go to plan. I set off on Saturday 23rd April, but had to stop, due to injury, on Sunday 24th April.

Don't worry, though! The challenge remains! I now plan on attempting the walk again in August 2011, when I will hopefully be fitter and be able to manage the weight of my pack better.

The Challenge

My challenge is to walk the West Highland Way in August 2011. The West Highland Way is Scotland's first official long distance route from Milngavie, near Glasgow to Fort William. At 96 miles long, it takes on average 5-8 days to walk, and is a true test of stamina. I hope to walk it over 7 days.

There are several ways to walk the way, in terms of accomodation and luggage. You could stay in B&Bs and Hotels at every stop along the way. You can also use a luggage transport service which will move your luggage to the next stop for you.

I plan on carrying all of my luggage and accomodation with me. I plan on camping at campsites most nights, but may Wild Camp along the way.

About Me

My name is Grahame Boath, and I stopped smoking just over a year ago. Since then, I've put on over two stone in weight. I decided to get myself the goal of walking the West Highland Way in April. I'm currently in the process of trying to get fit enough for the walk. I have a Blog, which details some of the things I've been doing to train for the walk, as well as some of the things i've seen along the way. I also plan to update the blog each day of the walk, so that people can see what progress I'm making, what challenges I'm facing and what wildlife i'm seeing.

I've always had a keen interest in wildlife in general, and in recent years my interests have taken me towards the study of Butterflies and Moths in particular, which is why I have chosen to support Butterfly Conservation for this walk.

About Butterfly Conservation

Taken from the Butterfly Conservation website:

Butterfly Conservation was formed by a small group of dedicated naturalists in 1968 following the alarming decline of many beautiful butterflies

Most British butterfly species remain in decline. We aim to halt and reverse these declines. Our vision is of a world rich in butterflies for future generations to enjoy.

We are also committed to the conservation of moths, which are close relatives of butterflies and are in rapid decline.

Butterflies are beautiful and intrinsically valuable. Together with moths, their sensitivity to environmental change makes them valuable indicators of the health of the countryside.
