In October, I will be traveling to Bolgatanga in the Upper North East region of Ghana for one week with a team of Deutsche Bank staff and Afrikids to experience what life is really like for families in the poorest region of Ghana. We will be living and working as teachers and market stall workers, and personally as a farmer

What do Afrikids' Field Workers do? Collectively, they have changed the lives of over 100,000 people in the Bolgatanga region.

When Afrikids started working in Bolgatanga there was one case of infanticide of "spirit children" a month - now there are none. 16,500 children sleep rough or in slums in the nearest big city, having migrated there in the hope of finding their streets of gold, or unfortunately many are there as a consequence of child trafficking (when our colleagues were out in March they witnessed a decrepit bus full or children on the way south - you have no idea how desperate they were to pull those kids off that bus). Thanks to the work of Afrikids staff, 160 of these vulnerable young people have been fully repatriated and 12,000 cases have been prevented. Enforced child labour was common in the illegal gold mines - one of the scariest places we have ever been to. Afrikids has removed and placed in education 150 kids, and 475 cases have been prevented. Plus they educate 100 street children a year and provide a home for children who have no other options. Not to mention the schools they have built...
