Bupa Great South Run 2009 · 25 October 2009 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Hi, those of you that know me may also know that on February 18Th 2008 my dad died after battling for a long time with Alzheimer's.

My dad was 6'3'' tall, strong, kind and proud. To me he was the man I looked up to for encouragement and to guide me through life and was always there for me whenever I needed him regardless.

To me personally I think that having to end your days with Alzheimer's is the most humiliating, unkind way to to go.

Having to watch the man you knew as the strong, proud person regress to being as weak and helpless as a baby is heartbreaking. Going to see my dad in hospital was always hard, to see him shuffle along bent over and not walking tall and proud, sometimes with food down him like a child would have at times, empty eyes which at first lit up when he recognised us and as Alzheimer's got worse stopped because he didn't recognise us. To watch that man cry for no apparent reason or get angry and sometimes aggressive because he couldn't get people to understand. To watch that man deteriorate to such an extent that he couldn't wash or feed himself, go to the toilet himself and eventually be unable to get out of bed because he was too weak, slip in and out of a coma until thankfully on the 18th February after roughly 7-8 yrs his suffering was over. The last 2 weeks were the hardest of my life watching my mum's and my sister's hearts break and trying to be strong for them and my dad, if he knew what was happening to him I think he would of ended it himself, god knows how many times I thought about doing for him in that 2weeks, I certainly don't want to go like that!

I know that times may be difficult and everybody gets fed up with being asked to donate to charities, but if you could sponsor me on the Greaty South run, 10miles in Southsea I would be very grateful.

I am doing the run with my partner Diane, my eldest daughter Tara and her partner Andy.

Thank you again for taking time to read my page and for any donations you can give.
