UPDATE 26/03/2012: I'm sorry to say that I (Doug) have been excluded from the event due to a failure of the mandatory ECG test. Iain will still be running the event, so please keep your donations coming in. If you would like a refund of your donation, please get in contact with me.
Iain Greer and Doug Street are training hard for the 2012 Marathon Des Sables. It's a 6 day, 250km foot race through the Sahara Desert in Morocco. We need to slog through 40 degree heat, rocky outcrops, endless sand dunes, mountains, and rock hard river beds while carrying all our food and equipment for the entire race! There's also a minimum pace of 4km/hr to be maintained. More information can be found at the MdS website: http://www.darbaroud.com/index.php?lang=en
We have competed in several events together since we met in 2009 and the MdS is the latest challenge we have come up with. We wanted to do the MdS to really push our physical and mental limits, while raising money for a good cause.
The money raised will be split between two charities. Help for Heroes. They're an excellent charity helping the men and women who have been injured in recent conflicts. We both work with service men and women, and have a great respect for what they do, so we felt it was a worthy charity for all the money raised. More information on Help for Heros can be found at their website: http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/. The other is Captain Jim, a charity that was set up for Jim Philippson who was killed in 2006, serving in Afghanistan. http://www.captainjim.org/
A massive thank you to BAE Systems for donating a sizable sum, which is going towards Dougs and Iains equipment/entry costs, so all your donations could go to charity!
An even bigger thank you to anyone who donates!
