As a co-founder of Starwood's Road to Awareness charity bike ride supporting Unicef in their efforts to help the less fortunate in life, I will be taking part, together with 22 colleagues from Europe, Africa and the Middle East. in the third edition of the Road to Awareness ride, which, this year, will take the team to the Dolomites. Over 3 days we will cycle close to 400 kms taking us over several climbs that are famous from the history of the Giro d'Italia. For cycling fans the Pordoi, Fedaia, Costalunga, Sella and above all the Stelvio have become household names. All these climbs are on the menu and in total we will absorb 100 kms of climbing. The event takes place from August 26 till August 28 inclusive.

The Road to Awareness 2010 is part of Starwood’s Annual Associates Fundraising Campaign and will this year focus on raising funds for Unicef's SCHOOLS FOR AFRICA Project. Over the past 15 years, Starwood associates have raised over $1.4 million globally for UNICEF on-top of the Check Out for Children guest donations.  Thanks to the dedication and commitment shown by so many associates across the division, the ‘Road to Awareness’ (or ‘R2A’) campaigns in 2008 and 2009 were fantastic successes.  Today, UNICEF Egypt is using Starwood’s generous contribution of over $200,000 in 2009 to reach some of the most vulnerable street children in Cairo.   

We are looking forward to repeating the success of the Road to Awareness in 2010, aiming to again reach an annual associate fundraising total of US $ 200,000 – with the objective this year to give 1500 orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa the chance to stay in school and complete primary education, as part of Unicef's Schools for Africa project in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Institute.
