Story
Hello Everyone
I have signed-up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (Alt.: 5865Metres), and the 4th highest free-standing mountain in the world. In preparation for the 6 day climb that commences on 16th August.
I have been busy with fairly intense fitness training over the over 6 weeks to get myself into shape both physically and (very critical) mentally for the climb upto the summit. My daily routine entails of lugging a 10Kg backpack on the morning 6Km walk and working out in the Gym for 1.5 -2.0 Hrs on a Cross-trainer followed by a 4- 5 Km run on a Treadmill and weight-training for the legs has helped me shed kgs. and in building up my leg muscles and general physical and mental endurance. I have spent some time up in Ranikhet trekking uphill 15-18Km daily with a 10Kg back-pack, climbing 3000-5000ft in the process.
The climb will be particularly challenging beyond this height as the air becomes significantly rarer once we go beyond 16000ft.
But it should be FUN!!
For me this climb is especially satisfying as through it I will be raising funds for Operation Smile, on whose India board I serve as a Trustee.
Operation Smile, through free surgery and post -operative care and speech therapy, transforms the lives of children and adults suffering from Cleft Lip, Cleft Palette and other facial deformities. In India over 35,000 children are born each year with this terrible physical deformity adding to a backlog of nearly 1 million who have not received this surgery before.
