How this idea came about

This venture is all part of an effort to raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, the charitable Trust of The Royal Marsden Hospital, where Guy’s father is lucky enough to be receiving world class treatment for Bowel and Liver Cancer. The challenge is to raise £10,000 so that others can also benefit from the Marsden’s wonderful work. It’s being done the hard way - cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End, 1,000 miles in 10 days!

Our goals

To raise £10,000 in only 6 months between January-June 2010

To cycle 1,000 miles in just 10 days between 13-22 June 2010

The Cycling Challenge

The trip starts at John O’Groats, the northerly tip of and continues down into , finishing up in Lands End, the most south-westerly point in . The total distance travelled will be close to 1,000 miles by road. This route has been travelled before by bicycle and is typically completed in 14 days plus, usually with a days break.

To add to the sense of achievement, the aim is to complete the cycling in no more than 10 days - with much training anticipated in the lead up to June! A tricky feat, particularly for a group of only wannabe athletes!

There will be a support car carrying spare equipment, first aid kit and clean clothes for the evening. But for the duration of the ride it will be down to the riders to carry enough food and drink, repair their bikes, avoid bad drivers, navigate their way through the countryside and make those strenuous uphill climbs – be it the Scottish highlands or Cornish moors, for around eight hours a day.

Fundraising events

There are several events and initiatives that have been arranged in order to reach the target of £10,000 in 6 months.

These include:

-          a cake bake off competition and prizes for the winners – with slices of cake sold to work colleagues (February)

-          a second hand book sale (February)

-          an online sports quiz with a prize for the winner (February)

-          a lunch party (March) several coffee mornings (April-June)

-          a cookery book - Chippy’s Quickies - full of friends and families favourite recipes (April)

-          a pub quiz with a prize for the winning team (May)

-          a black tie dinner party (May)

The Charity
