Home to Rome - Inspired Living · 20 August 2016 to 3 September 2016 ·

We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

This year, our fundraising focus is a 2 week 1842km ride from Winchester to Rome, setting out on 20th August 2016. There are 50 cyclists participating, and all sponsorship goes directly to Cancer Research UK, with participants "paying their way".

In September 2008, Alison (my wife) and Marey, the wife of Dr Tim Frank (my cycling buddy), were both diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, Marey passed away in 2009. Following surgery and ongoing chemo, Alison continues to make great progress, with significant ongoing treatment and support from Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

In 2009, with a lot of help from friends and supporters, we formed a new CRUK Committee, "Inspired Living", as a positive response to these experiences, with the following objectives:

  • Raise £1m for CRUK (>£230k raised so far)
  • Inspire healthier lifestyles (i.e. get people back on their bikes!)
