Story
Working in Haiti since 2008, Handicap International was able to start working less than 24 hours after the earthquake. Currently our team of 300+ people is:
- providing care to the wounded and to amputees. There are between 2,000 and 4,000 new amputees in Haiti. We are providing post-operative rehabilitation care, distributing walking aids and setting up a long-term follow-up system for patients. At the end of February, we started fitting amputees with emergency artificial limbs, before providing them with permanent ones later in the year. Our goal is to create a long-term capacity to provide rehabilitation services in the country by training Haitian staff.
- running mobile healthcare teams to provide care when injured or disabled people are unable to travel to hospital
- delivering humanitarian aid using our 45 trucks to deliver water, medicine, food and shelters
- distributing emergency kits (sheets, rope, blankets, water filters, buckets, etc) to vulnerable and disabled people
- providing psychological support to survivors traumatised by their experience
- building shelters taking into account the specific needs of vulnerable and disabled people
