Hi Everyone, At the end of March I will be running the Liverpool Half Marathon with the wonderful Ellen Murphy, who is a dear friend from University.  To give me that extra motivational boost, I am raising money for charity.  The charity I have decided to raise money for this challenge is particularly close to my heart. CALM - the charity I have chose to raise money for - stands for the Campaign Against Living Miserably.  CALM was set up in 2006, in response to the high suicide rate among men, by Anthony Wilson who has a background in music, which plays a key part in the campaign.  Alarmingly suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 35.  Although CALM is targeted at young men between the ages of 15-35, they offer help, information and advice to anyone within the UK, regardless of age.  My choice behind this charity lies beneath my family history and for some of you what I'm about to say will make you feel uncomfortable, in advance I apologise, it's just my story and why I believe in this Charity.  I lost my father to suicide when I was 6 and at 20 my sister passed away as a result of years of alcoholism.  To add to the tragedy last year my brother also felt the world was too tough and took his own life.   So I feel very passionate about supporting this charity based on my own personal experiences.  CALM's aim is to change people's attitudes so that young men feel able to seek help for themselves and create a climate of public opinion so that it's acceptable for them to do so.  This is their approach: We need to position CALM as the mainstream charity for and on behalf of young men.  We don’t expect, or want to be the only source of help for young men. We see our future as very similar to where the Breast Cancer Campaign is today, with a focus upon men not women, music not fashion. The challenge facing us is to:  · create a campaign which young men feel able to identify with  · create a campaign free of the stigma surrounding mental health · alert the public to the issue of suicide among young men and to rethink their assumptions about young men   So there you have it.   Please help me support CALM by donating through JustGiving.  Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
