This weekend I am running in the London 10k (info: http://www.thebritish10klondon.co.uk/).  I'm running in support of the Whitechapel Mission.  Those of you from DWS will already know what great work they do.  For everyone else, here's a bit of info (http://www.whitechapel.org.uk/):

Whitechapel Mission is dedicated to providing a lifeline to people of London who struggle each day against homelessness, hunger, poverty and exclusion.  I, along with many of the staff from DWS volunteer on a regular basis for morning shifts cooking and serving hot breakfasts at the Mission's centre in Whitechapel.

The Mission's daycentre is open 365 days of the year from 6am; their doors are open to anybody that walks through, without exception.  The Mission expects to see between 150 and 200 people on a weekday and as high as 300 on a weekend.

About themselves they say:

We continue to be a lifeline for many poor and homeless people in the East End of London.  We are the last chance for many people.  Our goal is to take care of all people coming through our doors.  We provide hot food and drink, showers, clothing, free toilets and the chance of a wash and brush-up.  Our goal is to empower people that are excluded and we begin that process by creating an environment built on trust, belonging and understanding.

Whitechapel Mission is 'family'.  We provide a safe, informal, friendly, hassle-free place where people can come and find warmth and shelter, without being moved on by a policeman or angry shopkeepers, or kicked, sworn at and spat upon by passers-by.  We promote the concept of being part of the Mission and taking ownership of the Mission.  Any and all who come are welcome.
