In March 2011 I was lucky enough to be part of a crew that sailed 1540 miles from Azores (Ponta Delgada) to Southampton, UK. It was an amazing adventure and a brilliant opportunity to be part of a famous and challenging voyage.   The Tall Ships Youth Trust is a purely run Charity that was founded in 1956. Its main aim is dedicated to the personal development of people aged 12-80yrs old through the crewing of ocean going sail training vessels. It is the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity and considerably changes a person’s perspective on life. An important aspect to take away from this charity is the enormous impact it has on opening the eyes of children from less fortunate/troubled backgrounds. It gives young people an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone, make friends with people from a mixture of cultures and develop their understanding of adventure and self achievement.     To honour and aid further development of youth voyages a team of us are rowing in the Great River Race, London’s river marathon 21 miles up the River Thames.
