The Brittle Bone Society provides support for people affected by the rare, and painful bone condition Osteogenesis Imperfecta. It provides specialist advice, support and equipment to people with the condition, their families and carers, medical and other professionals.

Story

Hi we’re Hayden Vincent & Oliver Zissman and we will be running in the London 2013 marathon. We want to raise as much money as we possibly can for THE BRITTLE BONES SOCIETY.

The Brittle Bones Society is an incredible charity; they are the only UK wide organisation providing support to people affected by the bone condition Osteogenesis Imperfecta commonly known as OI. You can find out more about this condition here: www.brittlebone.org

We have chosen this charity because 2 of Hayden and Katie’s children suffer from Osteogenesis Imperfecta type 1. Louie, 7 and Millie 3 have broken 8 bones between them in their short lives.

There are lots of children in the UK who are constantly breaking bones, living their lives in casts not able to play with their friends & having repeated painful operations. It is estimated 1 in 15,000 in the UK have OI. Many who suffer with OI are on medication to make their bones stronger but are still wheelchair bound.

There are different types of OI from type 1 to type 8 and each child or adult with OI are individual. Both Louie and Millie have type 1 but they suffer very differently. Louie is sensitive and when he breaks something screams loudly in excruciating pain. Little Millie is different, she has broken bones in the past like her metatarsal (a bone in the foot) and Hayden & Katie never knew this until it was discovered in an X-Ray.

Luckily Hayden & Katie are fortunate enough to have private health insurance. When Millie had her first break at only 11 months old they had to go through unfounded accusations of child cruelty. Fortunately they were covered to have a genetic test that thankfully diagnosed the condition. The NHS refuses to fund this test that costs £2,000. Sadly many families have been torn apart because of this.

We would both really appreciate your help and support in getting us to our goal of raising as much money as possible for this well-deserved charity dedicated to helping families, adults and children with OI to live as normal life as they can.
