Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. The London Marathon is one of The Rainforest Foundation largest event-funding source, so me and my friend Lauren have decided to start running and raising money. However having only just been taken on board at the beginning of Feb this has left us with a mere 11 weeks to get fit and raise as much as we can for April 17th. If you can donate anything at all, it will really help the Rainforest Foundation so they can do their thing and protect the ever-decreasing rainforests and the people that call it their home.  HOW YOUR MONEY CAN HELP   £20- Will help a Dad protect his family. It will help a father gain his legal documents. Many indigenious forest people in the Congo Basin do not have baisc legal documents, such as national identity card or a birth certificate, which often means that officially they do not 'exist'. £50- Will send a child to school. £75- Will protect 3 acres of vital rainforest, which allows the indigenious people to survive. Imagine if someone took away our supermarkets, we didn't get paid and had no land to farm animals. We would die. This is what is happening to them. £100- Proving they are there! GPS MAPPING SYSTEMS. It will buy a GPS system for forest communties to map their land. By producing digitally accurate maps they can prove their existence to the government and keep loggers off their land. <div> A few facts about the rainforest that are quite astounding really...</div> We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are beginning to appreciate their true value.Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6%. Time is running out and if deforestation continues at its current rate then by 2050 the planet's rainforest could be a thing of the past Around 150,000 square kilometres of tropical rainforest, equivalent to the size of England and Wales, is destroyed every year.    Rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is perceived as only the value of its timber by short-sighted governments, multi-national logging companies, and land owners.   There were an estimated ten million Indians living in the Amazonian Rainforest five centuries ago. Today there are less than 200,000.   In Brazil alone, European colonists have destroyed more than 90 indigenous tribes since the 1900's. With them have gone centuries of accumulated knowledge of the medicinal value of rainforest species.   At least 3000 fruits are found in the rainforests; of these only 200 are now in use in the Western World. The Indians of the rainforest use over 2,000                                                                                 Many millions of species of plants, insects, and microrganisms are still undiscovered                                                                             Most medicine men and shamans remaining in the Rainforests today are 70 years old or more. Each time a rainforest medicine man dies, it is as if a library has burned down These are just a few facts out of hundreds and thousands about the rainforest.
