25th July 2010.
Yeaaaaahhhhhhh we all managed to complete the Fun Run today. Daddy Martin made his personal best and completed the route in 25mins, closely followed by Auntie Lynne at 27mins. The rest of took a lovely but brisk stroll and completed the route in 60mins. At the moment it looks like we've raised over £1000 as a group, so a big thanks to those of you who sponsored us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We'll add some photos in the next couple of days.
Our daughter Anna made a surprise appearance on the 5th Dec 2009, arriving very premature at 29+3weeks and weighing just 2Ibs 14oz. Despite her early arrival Anna was a wee fighter and progressed well. In total Anna spent just under 7 weeks in the Neonatal Unit, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and thanks to the hard work of all the doctors and nurses we now have a happy, healthy and chubby baby.
Until the arrival of Anna we knew very little about premature babies but now recognise all the hard work that goes into the treatment of these babies. We also know what a stressful and emotional time it is for families with babies in the Neonatal Unit. Martin and I have chosen to raise money for BLISS as prematurity is far more common than most people realise. One in every eight babies in the UK is born premature or sick. That is 80,000 babies every year. 17,000 of these babies need intensive care, often for many weeks or even months - yet all too often, the right support just isn't there. As medical treatments continue to improve, this figure is rising all the time. There are chronic shortages of specialist nurses to provide the care they desperately need. The vital care that premature and sick babies receive after birth can have a profound impact on the rest of their lives. And for families struggling to cope with having a baby in special care, this will be one of the most difficult, emotional and stressful times of their lives. Bliss, the special care baby charity, was established nearly 30 years ago and continues to champion the care of the most vulnerable babies and their families.
Babies born premature or sick each day, only a tiny amount will receive an appropriate level of care. BLISS believes all babies in intensive care should receive the 1:1 nursing given to children and adults and that receiving this would significantly improve the outcomes for these babies.
As the UK's only premature baby charity which aims to improve neonatal care in order to improve survival rates for premature babies. They rely on donations and support from generous people like yourselves, no amount is too small so please donate.
