Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our the page for the Royal Mencap Oxfordshire Dragon Boat Team .

We are rasing Money to help Mencap campain for the NHS to Get it Right when people with learning disabilities use heatlh care services. This part of Mencap's Learning Disability Week.

People with a learning disability don't get equal healthcare. They receive fewer health screenings, and are often treated by doctors and nurses who do not understand learning disability.

This is despite the fact that people with a learning disability are more likely to have poor health or suffer from serious conditions like epilepsy and dementia.

A learning disability is caused by the way the brain develops before, during or shortly after birth. It is always lifelong.

It is not mental illness or dyslexia.

People with a learning disability find it harder than others to learn, understand and communicate.

There are 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK. Most are treated as ‘different’. They do not have the same control over their own lives as the rest of our society.

That’s why Mencap is here. We work with people with a learning disability to change laws and services, challenge prejudice and directly support thousands of people to live their lives as they choose.
