Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Most of you know, I have six chickens, which I absolutely dote after. What you may not know, is that 3 of them are adopted ex-battery hens that were rescued by the Battery Hen Welfare Trust. While they are the world's most spoiled chickens today, they spent the first year of their lives indoors, living packed in a cage too small to stand or turn around and under constant artificial light to encourage laying. After one year, they are 'spent', they stop laying, their bodies too depleted to continue. Uneconomically viable for the farmer to keep, they are culled. That is, unless the BHWT rescuers get involved.  On a rescue day, these unpaid volunteers wake up very early, travel to the farm to collect the hens, inspect their health, and then coordinate collection with military precision. They are 'animal welfare heroes' and I am grateful for their efforts and the beautiful birds that having now fully recovered, lay 3 lovely brown eggs for me every day.

Unfortunately, even with the fantastic efforts of volunteers, there is a cost to running the charity in transportation, caring for sick birds, feeding them, and administrative overhead. I hope to raise money to assist this charity to continue its fantastic work.
