As some of you may be aware, our son Joshua, contracted Meningococcal meningitis in November 2013, aged 14 months. We took Joshua to the A&E department at Manchester Children's Hospital on the morning of Sunday 4th November 2013, and after being examined, the doctors became concerned because of his non-responsive movements. After numerous tests they were 100% certain he had some form of meningitis, and by early evening he had been admitted to Paediatric Intensive Care where he remained until late Monday evening of 5th November 2013. He was then transferred to an isolation ward as it was still not known what strain of meningitis he had actually contracted. It was later confirmed that he had Meningococcal meningitis.
After a week of steroids and antibiotics Joshua was allowed to come home on Saturday 9th November 2013.
He is now 20 months old and is progressing extremely well. Thankfully he does not exhibit any of the devastating side effects that can accompany this illness.
Since returning home, we have been in regular contact with the Meningitis Society and they have been incredible in both their support and advice. As Joshua's parents, we do not want to make this a sob story, but we do want to raise awareness of meningitis, and therefore we will be taking part in a 14.45 mile sponsored walk on Thursday 29th May 2014 from Edale to Glossop via the Pennine Way (difficulty rating 4 out of 5) to help raise funds for the Meningitis Research Foundation.
On behalf of Joshua and all children who have been, or might be, affected by this dreadful infection "thank you".
