The Millennium Goals state that by 2015 all children will be able to complete a full course of primary education; all 192 states in the United Nations signed this. However, in the impoverished barrio of Milagro, Trujillo there is still thousands of children not attending school because their parents simply cannot afford to pay. Not only is it a child´s Universal Human Right to receive an education, but without it they have no hope of a future out of poverty. So we want to give our Smallhelp to achieving the Millennium Goals.
We are working with six families all living below the poverty line or in extreme poverty. The majority of their houses do not have clean or running water, electricity or a toilet. These families can only just afford the basics they need to survive, and many are living on a household income of less than 400 soles a month ( under 100 pounds) for a family sometimes as large as 10. Therefore paying an average of 200 soles per child to attend school for them is impossible. To make things even worse on this stark situation all but one of the mothers in these families is a single mother, this then leads on to the terrible fact that some of the children have to work in the nearby rubbish dump to help pay for the family’s needs, as their mum has no one else to turn to for support.
In the 2010 child labour conference Minister Piet Heil Donner from the government of the Netherlands said this:In the following year we would like to help more children get an education, however as we are a new NGO in Peru we want to start small and make sure our system works before we extend it to more children.
“One reason why child labour exists is that parents are unable to earn sufficient income to support their family. Child labour is often a choice between life and death. Clearly, therefore, we cannot eliminate child labour simply by prohibiting it. We must take flanking measures to ensure that child labour is no longer necessary in order to supplement the family income.” We want to help end child labour. Children should be allowed to be children, however in order to do this we need to provide their mothers with a sufficient income so that they no longer rely on their children. We aim to do this through starting a microenterprise artisan project. We hope that this will not only eliminate child labour among the children in our project but will also give these women the opportunity to take responsibility for their child and their future.
However with your Smallhelp we can change these children and their family’s futures. we want to put all 15 of the children in school, we want to give them the education they have the right to and we want to be able to help their mothers provide their families with a better life and future. But we can’t do it alone, we are all citizens of this world, all with same Universal Human Rights and we should all have an equal chance to the future we want. Without an education these children will remain living in poverty, they will remain illiterate and then so it will continue with their future children. Help us put a stop to the poverty cycle here in Milagro, give these children their rightful education and their mothers a way to help their families as every mother has to do. If we each give a Smallhelp, we can make a life changing difference to these children and their families.
